Dressmaker recycle fabric: basket & trimming checks

Steam release · community notes, September 2026 · Reviewed 29 September 2026

At the cutting table, players report that dragging a cut panel reveals a recycling basket. Returning fabric depends on the original cloth area still being there: if that section was trimmed away, do not assume recycling will refund it.

Find the basket while holding a cut panel

HelKjosse describes the basket appearing when you drag a cut piece from the inventory beside the cutting table. Another poster says the bin appears near the bottom right while holding fabric. It can blend into the table, so look while holding the piece rather than expecting a permanent, prominent button.

Distinguish the paper pattern from the cut cloth. Getting a pattern piece back is not the same as recovering material you bought. That distinction caused confusion in the recycling discussion.

Keep the original cloth area until you are sure

Significant-Owl-7262 explains that a recycled piece returned to the hole it came from when the original fabric section remained on the table. Cutting away the end of the bolt to reveal more space removed that recovery path in their experience.

The original poster initially reported a failure even without trimming. Their later edit says an update fixed it and that fabric then returned as long as the original area had not been cut off. Another commenter still described inconsistent behaviour. Treat this as a useful condition to check, not a promise that every lost piece is recoverable.

A cautious sequence for a wrong fabric choice

  1. Before trimming away a used section of cloth, check whether you may need to revise the panels cut from it.
  2. If a panel uses the wrong fabric, try the recycling basket at the cutting table.
  3. Inspect the original fabric area and the pattern inventory separately to see what came back.
  4. If nothing returns, note whether you trimmed the original section and which game build you are using. Avoid repeatedly buying replacement cloth until you understand the result.

Preview placement before spending more

CustmomInky describes using free burlap to build a temporary version of a dress and identify which panels should receive different fabrics. Check the displayed price in your game before following that tip. The developer’s inventory hover hint is a quicker first step when all you need is a panel’s location.

For a more complicated colour layout, record the placement and intended fabric in the planner. A visual check can reduce mistakes, but it does not provide a guaranteed fabric-length calculation. Keep enough information to tell a changed design from a missing piece.
